Did you know?

Flies are small—but their jobs are enormous!

Real flies do far more than buzz around. They help flowers, wildlife and whole ecosystems. Here are some fascinating reasons to appreciate them.

01

They pollinate flowers

Many flies carry pollen as they visit flowers for nectar. Hoverflies are especially important pollinators.

02

They help make chocolate

Tiny flies called midges are the main pollinators of cacao trees—the trees that give us cocoa beans.

03

They are nature’s recyclers

Fly larvae help break down dead plants, animals and other organic matter, returning valuable nutrients to the soil.

04

They feed other wildlife

Flies and their larvae are an important food source for birds, fish, frogs, spiders and many other animals.

05

Some protect plants

The larvae of some hoverflies eat aphids and other tiny plant pests, helping gardeners and farmers naturally.

06

They are amazing fliers

True flies have one pair of wings. A second, tiny pair of balancing organs helps them turn and steer in the air.

Freddie the fly

Strength: determination

Freddie keeps trying

When Freddie sets his sights on a cup of tea, being tiny does not stop him. His warm, funny adventure opens up gentle conversations about trying again, changing approach and celebrating effort.

“A small step still takes you forward.”
Try Freddie’s three-step pause
  1. What am I trying to do?
  2. What could I try next?
  3. Who could help me?
